Winston-Salem Journal Endorses June Atkinson for State Superintendent
Atkinson, a former high-school and community-college teacher, has done a good job of standing up for students and diversity in schools. While she’s been at the helm, the state’s high-school graduation rate has climbed from 68 percent to 86 percent. She’s received widespread honors for her work. She’s the best suited to improve public education, including by promoting diversity in schools and standing up to the legislature’s disturbing trend of poor regulations on charter schools, and failing to balance support to them with support for conventional schools.
